Can I Change Employer on My Employment Permit in Ireland?
Yes, in most cases. Since the Employment Permits Act 2024, you no longer start from zero. You can apply to change the employer named on your permit. The route depends on which permit you hold. There is also a waiting period.
What changed under the Employment Permits Act 2024
Before this Act, moving jobs usually meant a new permit application. Section 27 of the 2024 Act created a proper change of employer process. Either you or your new employer can apply.
You must wait a set period after starting work on the permit. Current Department guidance puts this at nine months. That is down from the old twelve months.
What kind of move counts
The Act does not let you move into any job you like. The new role has to stay close to your original one.
If your new job falls outside that category, this route will not work. You would need a fresh employment permit instead. That application goes in under whichever occupation list applies on the day.
Other conditions the Minister checks
An application can be refused on a few grounds. One is that you were not genuinely working the stated role for your current employer. Another is that your new terms are not comparable to your old ones.
Time spent outside Ireland matters too. A continuous absence of three months or more can count against you. This applies where the absence was unconnected to your job.
What your new employer needs to provide
Your new employer needs to give you a written job offer first. You will both need to sign a new employment contract.
The employer must also show recent compliance with Revenue. This is usually done through statutory return statements from the last three months.
One rule catches people out often. You cannot start with the new employer until the updated permit issues. Starting early breaches your permit conditions.
When you no longer need a permit to change jobs
Some permit holders eventually stop needing an employer-specific permit. Critical Skills Employment Permit holders may become eligible for Stamp 4 permission. This is granted after a set period working in Ireland (21 months). Stamp 4 lets you work for any employer, with no permit application each time.
